The Washington Commanders lackadaisical offseason can be attributed to their conviction in the make-up of their roster. It’s obviously a huge “if,” but this has the potential to be a top 10-15 roster in the NFL if everything falls into place.
Following the acquisition of Carson Wentz and draft picks that are expected to contribute heavily as rookies, lead personnel decision-maker Ron Rivera left no stone unturned in his pursuit of making process ahead of a big Year 3.
Between inking players to reserve/future contracts and signing ample undrafted free agents post-draft, the Commanders will have no shortage of roster battles unfold at training camp. That’s a huge positive, as competition usually brings out the best in players. On the flip side, however, it puts these newcomers in an unfavorable position in terms of making it beyond the final round of roster cuts.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at some newly-minted Commanders who could get cut/released before the 2022 campaign.

The Commanders signed Hamilton just before the start of mandatory minicamp, and the move opened some eyes amongst fans. An interior defender with 27 NFL games under his belt, Hamilton boasts the most experience of any of Washington’s defensive tackles not named Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne.
Unfortunately for Hamilton, the club has championed roster continuity during Rivera’s two years as head coach, so he’ll likely have to beat out one (or two) of Daniel Wise, Case Toohill, James Smith-Williams and Efe Obada, the latter two of whom have the versatility to kick inside on passing downs.
If for nothing else but his experience, we’d like to see the Commanders give Hamilton a puncher’s chance at making the team. Over the last two seasons, Hamilton played 19 of his 27 career games (albeit with the Cowboys), recording 20 tackles, 14 pressures and two QB hits to go with a respectable 62.1 pass-rush grade from PFF.
Washington could do a lot worse than that for its fourth DT. Alas, it’s far more likely Hamilton gets cut than makes the 53-man roster.
