With the NY Giants 2022 training camp here, 90 players will begin the battle to secure a spot on the Giants final 53-man roster. This offseason the Giants went through a franchise overhaul that saw the departure of the embattled Joe Judge and Dave Gettleman and the arrival of Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen.
The Giants also saw the departure of many key veterans, including Kyle Rudolph, Logan Ryan, James Bradberry, Devontae Booker and more. The Giants did not have the cap space to replace the lost veterans so many of these key spots will be filled by rookie players. Each year at training camp, young players burst onto the scene, and some are discovered to be diamonds in the rough.
Nobody can forget undrafted rookie wide receiver turned Super Bowl winning franchise legend, Victor Cruz, who recorded two touchdowns against the Jets in his first preseason game in 2010. Every team is searching for their Victor Cruz, and with multiple spots available on the roster this season, there is a chance the Giants find another. Here are the four undrafted free agents who will make a splash at training camp.
With the Giants being forced to release Logan Ryan and James Bradberry to get under the salary cap, the secondary has some holes to be filled. A perfect candidate to join the secondary room is safety Yusuf Corker.
Corker, a 6-0, 197-pound safety out of Kentucky, played five seasons at Kentucky where he recorded 240 career tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 14 pass breakups and three interceptions on 2,175 snaps.
Outside of Adoree’ Jackson at the first cornerback position and young star Xavier McKinney at the free safety position, there are no other secondary starters locked in. While it is fair to assume that rookie fourth round pick Dane Belton and now veteran Julian Love will make the Giants roster, there is one other open spot at the safety position. Corker will have to outperform veterans Jarren Williams and Henry Black to receive that final spot.
Corker is a regarded as having a high football IQ and is a physical downhill tackler. Both of those traits are traits defensive coordinator Wink Martindale will fall in love with, which ultimately will lead to Corker making the Giants roster.
