Throughout its storied history, the Dallas Cowboys have always been a franchise that found some of its greatest players in the most unconventional ways. For example, the late great Hall of Fame wide receiver, “Bullet” Bob Hayes, was drafted by the Cowboys in the seventh round of the 1964 NFL draft.
Even though Hayes was two-sport stand-out in track and football at Florida A&M University, he was known more for his feats on the track field as he won a gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Regarded as the fastest human alive, the Cowboys had the foresight to draft him and make history with Hayes being the only NFL player to win a gold medal and Super Bowl.
In addition to drafting Hayes, the Cowboys have a great track record of finding undrafted free agents that have turned into Pro Bowlers, Super Bowl winners, and Hall of Famers. Like recent 2021 Hall of Fame inductee Drew Pearson, 3x First-team All Pro defensive back Everson, two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Miles Austin, and four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo.
Despite all of the drama and disappointments in the Dallas franchise, drafting talented players and finding hidden gems in undrafted free agents is the one thing that the fan base can count on. And this season will be no different, because Dallas already has a few prospects that could not only make the 53-man roster, but make an impact on the field in 2022.
Let’s take a look at these prospects and why they have a good shot at making the team.
