Meyers had the most target and receptions of all the offensive weapons in Sunday’s game. Once again the New England Patriots coaching staff has established him as the top receiver.
The chemistry between Meyers and quarterback Mac Jones is often celebrated however the connection between Meyers and Zappe was something special, especially considering this was only Zappe’s second game, his first start as well as his first time playing with Meyers in a regular season game..
In their postgame press conferences, Patriots players had a lot to say about the importance of Jakobi Meyers.
Quarterback Bailey Zappe:
Of course, it’s nice to have Kobs back out there. He has been in the league for a few years, so to have that veteran mentality back in the group is amazing. We know we have an all-around really good receiving group. Really the only job for us quarterbacks is to get those guys the ball and let them do what they do.
Center David Andrews:
Jakobi does a lot of great stuff for us. Not just catching the football. I have a lot of respect for how Jakobi blocks. He does a lot for our offense and is a dependable guy. He’s someone, as an offensive lineman, you know when you need someone to block, he’s going to go out there and stick his face in the fire a little bit. I really respect that. Jakobi is another undrafted guy, so he’ll always have a special place in my heart.
Meyers even spoke about his own performance:
It felt great, just being out there. I felt like I was smiling the whole game and really just enjoying the game. I felt like a kid again being out there. That was a special feeling. We got the win, which is most important, so going to go celebrate with the guys.
Meyers’ 111 receiving yards combined with running back Rhamondre Stevenson’s 161-rushing yards was the first time the Patriots had a 100-yard rusher and 100-yard receiver in the same game since Week 2 in 2016 against Miami when LeGarrette Blunt ran for 123-yards and Martellus Bennett had 114 receiving yards.
In the three games he has played this season, Meyers has 20 receptions for 261-receiving yards and 1 receiving touchdown.
Meyers’ absence from the previous two games was missed. He has become the Patriots most reliable offensive weapon and it has been shown that the Patriots are better when he is on the field.
From being an undrafted rookie free agent to the teams top receiver, the New England Patriots have struck gold with Jakobi Meyers.
