With the second week of preseason in the books, the next round of cuts is expected to begin for the Chicago Bears, who will need to trim the roster from 85 to 80 players by Tuesday at 3 p.m. CT.
There are three rounds of cuts following each preseason game, with the first two rounds of cuts being gradual (90 to 85 on Aug. 16, 85 to 80 on Aug. 23). Teams will have to trim their final roster from 80 to 53 players on Aug. 30.
There are a number of roster bubble players who made a strong case for a roster spot — or to at least get through this round of cuts — in the Bears’ win against the Seahawks.
We’re breaking down the players who could be among the second cuts of the summer and then sharing our predictions for the next five cuts.

It’s been a rough preseason for veteran tackle Shon Coleman, who’s committed penalties and has gotten beat on multiple occasions, including giving up a sack. At this point, the offensive line appears to be set, whether it’s starters or depth pieces, and Coleman doesn’t appear to factor into things. Could they keep him around for the preseason finale? Perhaps.

Jake Tonges has served as Khari Blasingame’s backup at fullback this summer. While Tonges scored a touchdown in Thursday’s preseason game, he could be among the next round of cuts. After all, the Bears just signed another fullback in Jake Bargas. While Blasingame was injured, he’s healthy and back at practice. Could this be the end of Tonges?

Caleb Johnson finds himself battling for a roster spot among a competitive linebacker group. But his chances took a hit when he suffered a knee injury in last Thursday’s preseason game against the Seahawks. While Johnson is a core special teams contributor, his knee injury is certainly a setback and could cost him a roster spot.

Tuggle signed with Chicago as an undrafted rookie free agent this offseason. He had some nice runs in the preseason, but Tuggle is at a disadvantage when it comes to landing a roster spot. That’s what happens when you’re part of arguably the deepest position group on the roster. But perhaps Trestan Ebner’s injury is enough to keep Tuggle around for the final preseason game.

There’s been plenty of competition for the final cornerback spot, and Jaylon Jones has gotten ample opportunities in the preseason. Against Seattle, Jones struggled in coverage and was picked on during one drive after he was beat for a deep gain. He responded with a couple of good plays following that rough series. But he suffered what appeared to be a lower leg injury in that same game, which hurts his chances of making it through the next round of cuts.

Shaa, an undrafted rookie, has made some plays during training camp. He certainly helped his cause by hauling in two catches for 22 yards on three targets. But Shaa always faced an uphill battle to earn a roster spot at receiver. Injuries at wideout might be a reason he survives the next round of cuts.

Delance joined the Bears as an undrafted rookie free agent, where he was always a long shot to make the roster. Delance is an intriguing prospect but he’s also at the bottom of the depth chart, which puts him at risk of being cut rather early on into the preseason.

The Bears signed safety Jon Alexander as an undrafted free agent this spring, and he was released a couple of weeks ago. But just last week, Alexander re-signed with Chicago ahead of the first round of roster cuts. In Thursday’s game against the Seahawks, Alexander recorded one QB hit. Given the safety position appears set, Alexander could find himself cut for a second time this summer.

Greg Stroman Jr. is among those who have been battling for a roster spot at cornerback. But unfortunately, Stroman has missed the first two preseason games with an undisclosed injury. It’s given other guys like Lamar Jackson, BoPete Keyes and Jaylon Jones more opportunities to make an impact. Given Stroman has been sidelined, he’s someone who could be at risk for being cut.

Following the addition of another fullback, it certainly feels like Tonges is at risk for being cut. While Shaa has made some nice plays in training camp and preseason, he feels like a potential cut at wideout. Delance has been listed among the bottom of the depth chart along the offensive line, and he figures to be among the next cuts. Injuries to Johnson and Stroman could likely mean early exits for them before the final big round of cuts.
