All 90 is a Steelers Now series profiling each of the 90 members of the Pittsburgh Steelers 2022 offseason roster.
Acquired: The Steelers signed Mateo Durant as an undrafted free agent after the 2022 NFL Draft on April 30, 2022.
Last season: Durant broke out for a huge season as a senior at Duke. He plated in 12 games and rushed 255 times for 1,241 yards, finishing second in the ACC in rushing yards and setting a Blue Devils record.. He also had nine rushing touchdowns.
He was also more involved in the passing game than ever before, hauling in 27 catches for 256 yards and two more scores. He was third in the ACC with 1,497 yards from scrimmage. Durant was named first-team All-ACC.
College: Was a three-season regular from 2018-20 before assuming the full-time starting mantle as a senior.
As a junior, Durant rushed 120 times for 817 yards, an eye-popping 6.8 yards per carry, and also scored eight touchdowns.
In total, he finished his Duke career with 489 carries, 2,562 yards, 18 rushing touchdowns, 55 catches, 480 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns.
Camp outlook: The Steelers did basically nothing to address their running back depth this offseason, bringing back little-used backups Benny Snell and Anthony McFarland and two undrafted rookies in Durant and Oklahoma State alum Jaylen Warren. Given how little the Steelers used their returning backs in 2021, it shouldn’t take much for one of the youngsters to leap up the depth chart in training camp.
Future: Durant signed a three-year rookie contract that will pay him $705,00 in base salary in 2022 and runs through the end of the 2024 season.
