The Pittsburgh Steelers placed defensive tackle Daniel Archibong on the team’s reserve/retired list, according to then NFL transactions page for Monday.
Archibong, 24, joined the Steelers practice squad on Sept. 1 last season are having spent training camp with the Chicago Bears. A 6-foot-6, 300-pound defensive tackle, Archibong was elevated to the active roster twice, in Week 11 against the Los Angeles Chargers and Week 12 against the Cincinnati Bengals. He recorded two tackles.
He initially joined Chicago as an undrafted free agent out of Temple following the 2021 NFL Draft. He registered eight tackles over the preseason along with a sack in Chicago’s three preseason games, but was cut out of training camp. The Bears wanted him to join their practice squad, but he chose to sign with the Steelers instead.
Over his five seasons with the Temple Owls, Archibong registered 87 tackles, six sacks, 10.5 tackles for loss, and 2 blocked field goals.
Archibong re-signed with the Steelers for the 2022 season in January. The Steelers did not announce the transaction or give a reason for Archibong’s retirement. He was a full participant in the team’s spring offseason training program, OTAs and minicamp.
Archibong was in a battle for playing time with Henry Mondeaux, Carlos Davis, Khalil Davis and rookie free agent Donovan Jeter. He likely would have started training camp on the fourth team in base defense after the late-offseason acquisition of defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi.
With Archibong’s retirement, the Steelers’ offseason roster stands at 89 players entering training camp and the team has 11 defensive linemen on their roster. Archibong joins Ben Roethlisberger and Stephon Tuitt as Steelers players placed on the retired list since the start of the offseason.
